Comments Requested For CAF’s Second Phase

Phase 1 of the Connect America Fund, or CAF may be overhauled if changes presented by the FCC are incorporated. Some of the tabled changes include a redefinition of what is an underserved area and what should be done with the $185 million that’s left in broadband funds. The FCC is requesting comments be made on the rules contained in Phase 1 of the CAF, setting a deadline for comments of January 28.

Many lessons were learned in Phase I of the CAF. One example was the fact that major companies didn’t accept the full amount of funds from the CAF that they were eligible for, meaning they weren’t able to support the $775 per household amount that the program was aiming for. Many of these companies cited CAF rule limitations as their reason for not accepting their full allotted amounts.

Fine Print To Look For In Your DSL Providers Contract

The days when there were a host of new internet customers has pretty much gone. Now, rarely anyone has never had an internet connection before. DSL providers and competing companies, therefore, now have resorted to doing what they can to get customers to switch to their company. This can mean lots of temptation in the way of free installation and no cost for equipment.

But before you jump ship, the important thing is to look over the contract offered by the new company. You may even want to ask for a copy of it before the installer arrives, just so you can be sure that you’ve read everything over. Although jumping ship to another company may seem like an easy thing to do, if you don’t like what you get with your new company, it can be very difficult and costly to terminate a contract early.

Using Less Bandwidth With High Speed Internet Providers In My Area

Keeping Your Bandwidth Usage In Check

If you watch a lot of streaming content with your connection to high speed internet providers in my area, then chances are you are using a lot of bandwidth every month. And ISPs know how much you are using, and many will send you a warning if you are threatening to reach your monthly limit. If you go over, you will usually have to pay a set price per megabyte you exceed. One solution to not going over your monthly limit is to simply use less. Spread your content watching over other sources, such as DVDs or watching what’s on TV. Or, if you must watch your content online, then choose a lower-quality video setting, something that’s a common option with most online players. You may also be eating up bandwidth with online chatting software like Skype, so a second look at your chat usage may also benefit you.

Satellite internet service, thanks to recent advances now offers higher speeds than ever before. And you might think that due to its nature, that satellite is the most expensive internet of any other connection type. But the truth is that you can often save a lot o n the cost of satellite service if you know where to look. For example, if you are moving and already have satellite, you may be able to use your current dish and receiver in your new area if the same company is available. This alone can save you a lot of money.

In addition to equipment savings, being handy at installing your dish can save you money on those fees. Of course, if you need to find a new company, then some comparison of their features and benefits will have to be done in order to find out which company offers you the most reliability and speed for your money.

New Social TV Rating For Nielsen, Twitter

A new agreement was announced this week between consumer ratings giant Nielsen and an unlikely partner: Twitter. The agreement announced a new rating that would see a metric being created for Twitter conversations as they relate to television shows, thereby extending Nielsen’s reach. The agreement comes at a time when innovations like IPTV are allowing more consumer interaction with their favorite shows, and where many fans migrate to Twitter using high speed internet to share their thoughts about broadcasts, often as they’re watching them.

The new agreement is slated to be a complement to Nielsen’s existing ratings for television, which will mean that advertisers will be better able to understand how the minds of their audiences work where it comes to purchasing decisions. For the consumer, more immersive television viewing and participation may be the result.

Avoiding A High Speed Internet Provider Nightmare

Looking for high speed internet comes easily to some people. But to others, it presents a golden opportunity for packing as much stress as possible into one situation. We’ve all heard horror stories about ISPs who overcharged, ignored customer complaints and disappeared from internet company radar seemingly overnight. Some people say that this can’t be avoided, but there is a way to prepare yourself.

It simply requires taking a good, long look at the companies that are available in your area, and then diving into finding more information about them. Do they have a good rating with their customers and with rating agencies like the Better Business Bureau? Can they offer you a high amount of uptime with consistent speeds? If you need to make changes to your account, is it an easy or difficult process? All of these things will help you determine which ISP is your dream company.

High Speed Internet Providers in My Area Not Forced to Bow to SOPA Rules

Breaking news just an hour ago from the Associated Press brings the results of ever-increasing public and private sector outcry – the SOPA and PIPA legislation will be postponed due to fears of censorship and the stifling of internet innovation.  The bills would require search engines, online advertising networks, and paypal and credit card companies from doing business with any foreign websites that engage in the facilitation of illegally downloading copyrighted content.   Lhis year, many of the high speed internet providers in my area signed a voluntary agreement with entertainment rights groups to contact their subscribers when their internet account was being used illegally, and to provide the account holder with warnings so that the practice can be stopped.  Ignoring the warnings may result in a serious slowdown of your internet connection.  Users who engage in file sharing with software like BitTorrents may also experience throttling issues.

High speed Internet Pushes Up Demand for Fiber Optics

The Fiber Optic industry will see continued growth over the next five years according to a report by the country’s largest publisher of industry research, IBISWorld.  The report indicates that wireless carriers will continue expanding fiber optic cable installations and the driving force behind this growth will be increased consumer demand for high speed internet availability on their wireless devices. The report also indicated that broadband connections will increase during the same five year period, although fixed broadband growth will be slower than during the previous five years. Even so, the growing trend will keep increasing industry demand.  The bottom line is that installations will increase due to expanding high-speed internet in rural areas, as well as increased infrastructure upgrades in more populated areas. All of growth will benefit the installation industry and should create many more jobs.

Toronto Paper Says Internet Providers Should Charge by Usage

The Toronto Star published a thought provoking article this morning entitled “Usage Based Internet is a Good Thing.” The article argues that paying for what you use when it comes to the Internet makes sense. After all, the more miles you drive the more you have to pay for gas. The more electricity you consume, the higher your bill. Should Internet providers charge a customer who only checks their emails the same amount as the customer who plays online games, streams videos and makes online phone calls? The article said a few years back bandwidth was not an issue. Video, however, changed that. Video streaming and downloading eats up gobs of bandwidth, requiring better equipment to control the flow. As more and more folks use the Internet to watch video, ISP networks will be forced to pay for expensive upgrades to their equipment.  Change, however, is not an option at this point. “It’s much like going from a 2 lane road to a 12-lane freeway — once the road is built there is no looking back” the article concluded.

The Internet Service Providers in My Area are Working to Help Low Income Families Get Online

Among the Internet service providers in my area is CenturyLink.  We received notification from them yesterday that they are now providing discounted Internet service to families with limited incomes.  The program, called Internet Basics will not only underwrite much of the cost of a monthly broadband subscription, it will also provide low income households with an Internet ready netbook, along with a free security program, for just $150. In addition, CenturyLink is offering free computer and Internet literacy classes that are designed to help individuals that have no working knowledge of the Internet. These classes, according to the information they sent me, are going to be held in different local communities around the country. It appears the program is being paid for entirely by CenturyLink.  My sister, who lives in another state, told me that her service provider, Comcast, is running a similar program.  I think it is great that these two corporate giants are trying to even-out the playing field for low-income families by giving them equal access to the Internet.

Internet Providers in My Area Offer Cable and DSL — Which Should I Choose?

A reader recently left a comment on one of our blogs.  It’s pretty interesting, so we decided to put down exactly what he said:  “While looking for Internet providers in my area, I came across an excellent review site that compared the offerings of several different companies.  Since there is a cable company that offers cable service in my area, I wanted to compare cable Internet to DSL.  The cable actually offered a faster Internet connection speed — but was it more speed than I needed?  This site actually helped me to appreciate that, for what I do online, DSL is easily adequate.  I also saved about $22 a month by going with DSL over cable.  I highly recommend that anyone wondering if they are getting the best deal on their Internet connection check out a comparison site.  They are great!
